Youko Sano

Youko Sano, through a thoughtful combination of colour, form and pattern, instills her objects with a sense of calmness and warmth.  She builds up layers of color on the surface of her forms in the hot shop, and when cold, cuts through the layers to reveal exquisite patterns, which both enhance and describe the form, while at the same time giving them a soft, silky surface allowing the viewer to rest both eye and heart.  Her imagery is based on  basket forms and patterns,  which remind her  of bird’s nests or cradles,  symbols of shelter, home, and family.

“I am trying to make works that can create a restful atmosphere. I want people to find warmth and integrity from my works.”

She shares a studio in Toyama, Japan with her husband, Takeshi Sano.

Chappell Gallery is built on a strong foundation of education, the fuel that has driven the art glass movement to its current heights.
Glass art is a global movement; it is far-reaching and speaks many languages.

In addition to representing artists from the United States, Chappell Gallery's founder, Alice Chappell, has sought out artists from around the world.
